Green Party sees Red over Orange

I managed to get the following printed in the Pinnacle News. http://www.pinnaclenews.com/

Green Party Sees Red Over Orange

Kate Woods most recent "Report from the Badlands" twice mentioned the Green Party. As a registered Green and follower of the orange water in New Idria, Im compelled to reply.

Of San Carlos Creek, Ms. Woods said "You would think the Green Party would have something to say about all the thousands of abandoned mercury mines that lurk throughout California." I assure your readers that the Green Party has the strongest ecological platform of any political party.

Our position on toxic wastes is that "EPA standards for the control of toxins are inadequate, poorly enforced, and allow for the export of known toxins to other countries. Identification and clean-up of toxic sites, even critical superfund sites, are severely inadequate."

The platform calls for actions to:

  • Contain and neutralize toxins at their point of use.
  • Clean up toxic waste sites.

The Green Party does not yet have the ability to enact the legislation required to act on these positions. Only with the support of those affected, as in San Benito County, will we gain that ability. Many local issues would benefit from the proposals of the Green Party including the issues of growth and sustainable development in Hollister and Gilroy.

Those interested in fundamentally changing the direction of San Benito County, Gilroy or Morgan Hill should join the Greens to build a clean, sustainable future. There is time before the elections next March to build an organization to make those changes. Go to http://www.cagreens.org. Register Green. Get involved.
